casual and dressy shorts

This season we have seen more variations of casual and dressy shorts than ever. Wearing shorts might not be for everyone but when worn right they are a great alternative to a mini dress or skirt. Shorts aren’t just reserved for body shapes with long lean legs. And shorts doesn’t mean you are limited to cut-off  tiny denim daisy dukes (where debates about the sight of bum cheeks are sure to abound.)

Regardless of your leg vs the ratio to the rest of your body, mid thigh shorts are the most flattering.  The reason being is they provide the best illusion of longer legs.  They also act as a barrier for thigh rub. Stiffer fabrics also compress in at the waist and don’t gather at the crutch when walking.

The casual short

The Willow chambray short is a great short for beginners.  The soft chambray material will drape around your rear and looks great on both flat and rounded backsides. You can pair with a loose cotton top or shirt (tucked in or out) and a flat.  A neutral or beige bag contrasts nicely with chambray blue as well.  This outfit can be worn both on holidays and locally for a day at the park or running around doing errands.

We also love the Zimmermann black check short.  This short is so versatile as it can be worn both casually or dressy.  We’ve paired ours with a blue denim shirt and a wedge shoe.  The wedge elongates the leg and adds length to those who have shorter legs. Whilst the denim shirt and leather bracelets create a cool street style outfit.  We wear our shirts unbuttoned with a white tank or singlet underneath.

The bright floral print from Ostwald Helgason is divine and so playful .  It’s a great short for something a little extra special such as a lunch date or when you are going out for drinks.  This garment is high waisted so tuck in your crisp white shirt or loose t-shirt if you have a small waist, hourglass or inverted V shaped body. Add some wow factor with a statement necklace and opt for a neutral colour shoe to balance the glorious florals short and statement necklace.

The dressy short

To pull off a dress short and still look sophisticated, we recommend a knee length short.  This look works well on legs that have a long knee to ankle ratio versus the rest of the leg.  Match with a pointy pump or open-toe ankle boot and a statement necklace. Keeping the ensemble all black also looks sleek and fashion forward.

For a day event such as the polo or casual party try a lighter colour short.  We love the Scanlan Theodore red and natural cotton/linen short   It’s low rise and man style so the extra space will make thighs appear narrower. To keep the outfit looking more smart that smarmy add a blazer or tailored jacket.  A wedge or thick heel compliment a day outfit. Shop Style AND Tonic at the end of article.
